Hair Shedding vs. Hair Breakage

Hey my beauties! I have often talked about shedding vs breakage, but I feel the need to repeat this as many times as possible because there are still some confusion on difference between the two. Shedding refers to the natural process of hair falling out from the scalp or excessive shedding from the scalp due to internal imbalances. Breakage, on the other hand, is when the hair shaft snaps or splits. Lets break down the differences.

Hair Shedding

Hair shedding is a natural process that occurs when the hair reaches the end of its growth cycle. On average, people shed around 50 to 100 hairs per day. However, this number can vary depending on a variety of factors, including age, genetics, medication, hormones, compromised immune systemd and hair care practices.

Shedding is a natural process, excessive hair shedding can be a cause for concern. Excessive shedding can be caused by various factors such as hormonal imbalances, stress, poor nutrition, medication, and underlying medical conditions. If you are experiencing excessive shedding, it is recommended that you speak with a medical professional or a trichologist to determine the underlying cause.

Hair Breakage

Hair breakage occurs when the hair shaft becomes weak and brittle and eventually snaps or splits. There are several factors that can contribute to hair breakage, including heat styling, chemical treatments, rough handling, and over-processing.

Over-styling the hair with heat can cause damage to the hair shaft, resulting in breakage. Chemical treatments such as coloring, perming, and relaxing can also weaken the hair shaft and cause breakage. Additionally, rough handling of the hair, such as brushing or combing too vigorously, can also contribute to breakage.

Preventing and Treating Hair Shedding and Hair Breakage

Preventing and treating hair shedding and hair breakage require different approaches. Here are some tips to help you prevent and treat each issue:

Preventing Hair Shedding:

  • Eat a balanced diet that includes essential vitamins and minerals for healthy hair growth.

  • Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on the hair, such as tight braids or ponytails.

  • Use a gentle shampoo and conditioner that is formulated for your hair type.

  • Avoid over-styling your hair with heat tools such as flat irons and curling irons.

  • Manage your stress levels through exercise, meditation, or other stress-relieving activities.

  • Speak with a medical professional or a trichologist if you are experiencing excessive shedding.

Treating Hair Shedding:

  • Use a hair growth serum that contains ingredients such as biotin and keratin to promote hair growth.

  • Take supplements that contain vitamins and minerals that are essential for healthy hair growth.

  • Use a hair mask or deep conditioner once a week to nourish and strengthen your hair.

  • Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on the hair, as this can further exacerbate shedding.

Preventing Hair Breakage:

  • Avoid over-processing your hair with chemical treatments such as coloring, perming, and relaxing.

  • Use a heat protectant spray before using heat tools to prevent/minimize damage to the hair shaft.

  • Be gentle when brushing or combing your hair, and avoid tugging or pulling on the hair.

  • Use a wide-toothed comb or a detangling brush to gently remove tangles from your hair.

  • Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on the hair, such as tight braids or ponytails.

Treating Hair Breakage:

  • Trim/cut your hair regularly to remove split ends and prevent further breakage.

  • Use a deep conditioning treatment or hair mask to nourish and strengthen the hair.

  • Avoid using heat styling tools for a period to allow the hair to recover.

  • Use a hair oil or serum to protect the hair and reduce breakage.

For the most part, understanding the differences between hair shedding and hair breakage is essential in maintaining healthy and strong hair. With proper care and attention, you can prevent and treat these issues, and enjoy healthy and beautiful hair. Until next time my bauties…SMOOCHES!!!
