Opinion: Should Shampoo Be Included?

Hey my beauties! I’ve had a very frustrating conversation with a friend this weekend and quite frankly it’s been circulating on social media for a while also. This is the conversation about stylists requiring you to shampoo and blowout your hair prior to getting a service done. From examples I’ve read, it can be any service from a flat iron style to extension installs. I’ve even seen a post about someone charging for a “wash and go” curly service where the client comes in already shampooed; so I guess it’s just a “go” service HA! But seriously, there are times where shampooing before a service is good and other times where it’s not that great of an idea. Let me explain…

There are only two services I can think of that will be acceptable to have your hair on the clean side (one day old is prefered). That’s either a color service or a braid service. For a color service it’s good to shampoo prior to your appointment because it will ensure that there isn’t anything on the hair that can possibly obstruct or slow down the color process. I personally have never asked a client to shampoo prior to a color service because I want to make sure I’m taking care of the hair from beginning to end. The other service I would say is ok is getting any form of braids: box braids, crochet braids, goddess braids etc.

Outside of those two services, shampooing the hair AT the salon should be a requirement and here’s why. First and foremost, you never know if the client is using what is needed for their hair, therefore you can’t course-correct should their hair start to act wonky. For example, if their hair is dry because they don’t know they need to use a moisturizing shampoo, when you go to heat style you have the issue of possibly singeing someone’s hair because it wasn’t prepped properly. The next problem is that you don’t know if that client shampooed their hair thoroughly and therefore may possibly pass on germs and scalp issues causing a very unsanitary work ethic.

In conclusion, from a client’s perspective, I would suggest that you only get services from a beauty professionals that cares about the health of your hair from beginning to end. I will not characterize stylists that don’t shampoo the hair prior to services as bad people or bad stylist; I will say that they are not that concerned with the overall health of your hair and you should know that before making a decision to see that stylist. Let me know what you all think of this in the comments! Don’t forget to like and share.

Until next time…SMOOCHES!!!
