Gym Hair…UGH!!!!

Hey my beauties! One of the most frustrating conversations my clients have with me is their challenges with working out and keeping their hair picture perfect. When working out, if you sweat in your head like a rotisserie chicken in a grocery store grill then there is literally no way to avoid a hair disater. It’s like doing the ice bucket challenge and still walk out of the gym with the Beyonce fan blowing your perfectly styled hair in the wind. Now, I’m not saying I have a definitive answer but I have a few options that you can use in rotation so you won’t get bored with the same look. The reason I’ve come up with this rotation is because this is the best solution that keeps workout hair fun while most clients deal with the process of maintaining their health goals, which can be difficult enough.

My first option happens to be the most popular. That would be a protective style like braids, faux locs, and sew-in extensions. Protective styles keeps your natural hair out of the way altogether. You won’t have to worry about the style falling, sweating out or reverting back curly (for my naturally curly cuties that love a good blow out…more on that in a bit). Protective styles last 6-8 weeks but should never go longer than 8 weeks for best healthy hair practices.

My second option is doing a twist/braid out on your natural hair, a curly rod set or rollerset. These three options will allow for plenty of volume to “hide” most sweaty mishaps at the roots. These styles can last up to 2 weeks and actually look better the longer you have them.

My finally option are two smoothing methods. The first is what’s known best as a silk press, this will allow for treatments necessary to maintain heat styling. The other one is a keratin treatment, this is a temporary smoothing treatment that last up to 4 months, depending on the manufacturer, and can help with manageability. Now, here’s the caveat for both options, when you workout and the sweat takes over a little, IMMEDIATELY after your workout you will need to use a COLD blowdryer on your roots to dry any moisture in the hair. After that you will need to use heated rollers or, the safest option, wrap your hair and keep it wrapped until the cuticles have closed and you can salvage your style that way. This is definitly the most heavy lifting out of the all of these styling options.

My final thoughts are using all of these options in a healthy rotation allows for you to get to your hair goals, maintain the health of your hair and scalp and your overall physical health. While these are great options, I also know these aren’t the only options on the table but still a great place to start. Consult with your beauty professional to see what’s the best plan of action. I hope this helps to soothe the frustrations of what to do with your hair while you reach for your health goals. Don’t forget to comment, and share!

Until next time…SMOOCHES!!!
